The Struggle for Ethnic Autonomy in Myanmar: A Case Study of the Kachin Independence Movement
Brief description:
“The Struggle for Ethnic Autonomy in Myanmar: A Case Study of the Kachin Independence Movement” examines the long-standing conflict between the Kachin people (Kachin Independence Army- KIA) and the Myanmar central government, stemmed from unfulfilled promises of autonomy and deep-seated historical grievances. The study explores the Kachin struggle through the lenses of resource control, burmanization, militarization, cultural preservation, and colonial legacies. It also looks at the humanitarian impact of the conflict, including Internal displacement and human rights abuses faced by the Kachin community. Through analyzing these aspects, this research attempts to explain the challenges in realizing ethnic autonomy across the country and potential pathways toward a more pluralistic, and peace-oriented society by restoring the promises of autonomy.
